This young adult, paranormal, ghost story is aimed at youth in grades four to six. The story begins when eleven year old Wendy Wiles learns her parents are planning to get divorced. Wendy, her mother, and her twelve year old brother, Mike, are forced to move to an old rented farmhouse in rural Warren, Oregon. On move-in day, Wendy meets a neighbor girl who tells her their quaint country home is haunted. Events proceed quickly as Wendy, her new friend, Jennifer, and Wendy’s brother, Mike, see ghostly figures dancing in the woods. Despite Mom’s claims that “there’s no such thing as ghosts,” paranormal events continue to occur in the Wiles’ home. Meanwhile her brother Mike, arch-tease, continues to torment Wendy, claiming he’s causing the unusual happenings.

Wendy searches through library records to get to the bottom of the mystery. Finally with Jennifer’s help, Wendy begins to unravel the truth. At last even Mike can no longer disbelieve and decides to aid Wendy in her search. By the end of the story, the three young sleuths have uncovered an accidental death, a suicide and a murder.

Aday: What sparked the brainstorm that led to A Ghost for Rent?

Penny: I’d been thinking of writing a children’s novel for awhile, mostly because my then 11 year old daughter didn’t think I was a writer since all my published pieces were short stories or articles. A friend had moved into an old rented farm house after she and her husband split up. She told me about hearing and seeing a young ghostly figure playing the piano which had been left in the house. The more I thought about her story, the more it seemed like the perfect beginning to a novel for middle grade readers.

Aday: Do you have a method for brainstorming when ideas are elusive?

Penny: I like to read through magazines or newspapers when I’m having trouble finding ideas. Sometimes, like for Ghost for Rent, a conversation with someone will spark an idea. One of my adult short stories came from a newspaper article, another from a National Geographic magazine. The sequel to Ghost for Rent, which I’m working on, is based on a newspaper article about ghostly sightings at an historic restaurant in our area.

Aday: How will you promote sales for the novel?

Penny: I’ve already done a book signing at our local bookstore and issued press releases to our local newspapers. Recently, I completed a virtual book tour. I’ve also started participating at local social network sites.

Aday: Do you follow a book marketing plan? Will you share it with us?

Penny: I would love to have a book marketing plan, but unfortunately I don’t. The marketing aspect is still something I’m trying to learn. I attended a weeklong on-line conference recently (Muse Online Conference) and concentrated on marketing workshops. I’ve now built my own website, which I didn’t have before, and will be trying some of the other tips I learned.

Aday: What’s your writing process? Give us look inside. Tell us the how, when & why.

Penny: My writing process varies with the type of project I’m doing. When I’m working on a novel, I tend to write in spurts. I’m more comfortable with short story writing, so crafting a long novel is more intimidating. I often “see” a movie progressing in my head and follow that as I write. I keep track of my characters in a notebook with their descriptions and things that make them unique. For example, Wendy, my protagonist in Ghost for Rent, wants to be a writer. When she’s upset or sad, she writes poetry. Her brother, Mike, is a tease, so I’ve included scenes where Mike torments Wendy, much like my own brother teased me when we were kids. With my novels, I like to edit as I go since I don’t work on the story every day. When I begin for the day, I read the proceeding chapter to get a feel for where I was headed. I’m not an author who outlines, since my stories tend to take on a life of their own and often change mid-stream from what I thought I would be writing. When the book is complete, I let it sit for a few days or a week, then go back and edit. I also find reading the book aloud is useful, especially with dialog.

With non-fiction, I like to interview experts and add quotes to the material. I write tips for writers, parents and teens. These articles generally are done in one or two sittings. With these, I don’t edit as I go, but write the entire piece, then go back and edit.

Aday: What is the key(s) to your writing successes?

Penny: Often it’s merely a case of being in the right place, at the right time, with the right story. It’s important to know your market and what editors are seeking whether it’s a story or a non-fiction article.

Aday: If you do write another novel, what have you learned to make the process easier?

Penny: Unfortunately, for me, novel writing isn’t easy. The satisfaction when it’s finished, however, is worth the effort. Short story writing comes much easier. In writing the first novel, I did learn that keeping track of my characters is important. You don’t want your main character to have blue eyes in the first chapter and brown in the fifth. I know, myself, as a reader, these inconsistencies can ruin a story for me. If I make character sketches, those types of errors are less likely to happen. Of course, the usual things such as good grammar, tight writing, a great plot, and perfect beginning, middle and end, won’t hurt.

Aday: What piece of advice would you give other middle grade paranormal writers?

Penny: It’s important to know your audience. If you don’t have kids yourself, volunteer at the local library or school. Hang out at the food court at the mall and listen to kids talking. Research ghost stories and read other paranormal middle grade novels. Your ghosts don’t have to be like everyone else’s but there should be some similarities so they are believable. When it comes time to query publishers, research what each publisher is printing. Don’t approach an adult romance publishing house with your middle grade paranormal mystery.

Getting into Libraries

Despite all the book buzz online, it's still nice to get your book onto a library shelf. For most of us, this seems like an exclusive right devoted to an exclusive group of best-selling authors. While some piece of this is true, the reality is that if you have a good book, you can get into the library system. Here's how.

First, why would you care about hitting the library market? Because in a slow book sales season, as we've seen in the past few months, libraries are a great way to get to your reader.

What they buy: Each library gets a budget and they can spend it any way they want. Unlike Barnes and Noble, where their book purchases are often dictated by publishers or a sales order from their corporate office, libraries operate independently of each other. Libraries will generally buy hardback and trade books and tend to shy away from mass market paperbacks, but if you're in the latter category, don't let this deter you. There's still a lot of wiggle room when it comes to library orders and a few creative ways to get into their system.

Getting to know your local library: if you want to get into your local library it's important to get to know them, so dust off your library card, stop by and introduce yourself. Get to know who you're selling to.

Library websites: if your local library has a website, see if there's a place to make book recommendations. If you have local fans, encourage them to do the same on their library websites.

Library events: if you've been trying to get into your local bookstore to do an event but haven't gotten much traction, why not consider doing a library event (or two)? It's a great way to get "into" your local library, become acquainted with them, meet your local readers, and well, you know - get more exposure for your book. Many libraries also have reading groups that you might be able to participate in.

Reviews: most libraries look to review sources for their selections as well. Consider submitting your book to the following publications for review: Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and Forecast. These publications are largely ready by libraries and often librarians will buy based on a good review in one of these publications. You don't need to get reviews in all of them (though wouldn't that be great?) - getting a review in one of them should be more than sufficient to catch the eye of a ready-to-buy librarian.

Popularity: librarians like to stock what's popular, even locally. So if you're doing a lot of local events, talks, or speaking gigs, make sure and let your local libraries know. Also, if you're going to do TV or radio be sure and alert your library, thus giving them sufficient time to order the book.

Libraries might not seem as "glamorous" as the store window of Barnes and Noble, but libraries have considerably more staying power. Once your book is in their system it's in there for as long as your book is in print and the library sees there are readers for it. Also, consider the reorders as your local library will (hopefully) bring in more than one copy. Libraries are a not-to-be-overlooked part of your marketing campaign, and if you missed the review window, don't fret. You might still be able to gain some interest via events and local popularity!

A HORSE OF COURSE

When Aaron receives a horse for his birthday he decides to keep it in the house. Horace, the horse, has never lived in a house and finds it difficult to adjust as does the rest of the family. Even Aaron recognizes that it isn’t quite what he expected and he makes a difficult decision.

Aday: How are you promoting the book?

Shari: My book, A Horse Of Course, is being promoted on my blog and at bookstore signings and Christmas Bazaars. I also notify the newspaper, radio, and organizations that I belong to such as church and women’s groups. I will also mail out postcards.

Aday: At book signings how do you decorate your table?

Shari: Because this book starts at a birthday party, I will have balloons and a party hat. I also have a small plush horse that resembles Horace. I had great ideas for table decorations for my Rooter and Snuffle books and also for Nothing Stops Noah. I’m a little behind schedule with A Horse Of Course.

Aday: What giveaways do you have to promote the book?

Shari: I have bookmarks and will probably offer tootsie rolls and other trinkets. I ask people to sign up for a drawing and give away something. Then I add their names to my mailing list.

Aday: Have you approached any businesses other than bookstores to sell your books?

Shari: With The Misadventures of Rooter and Snuffle I approached Wildlife Images a wonderful organization that rescues wildlife. I offered to pay them $1 for every book I sold on CD. When the print books became available they were happy to stock them at their location where the public can tour and see the work they do with animals.

Aday: What are three different ways you have gotten book and story ideas?

Shari: Good question. The Rooter and Snuffle series was inspired by two raccoons that visited our porch when I was a child. There is a little bit of me in both of the main characters. My mother used to preach “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again” and so she inspired Nothing Stops Noah. A Horse Of Course was inspired by a little boy who told me he wanted a horse. When I asked where he would keep the horse he replied, “In my house.” I thought Of course!

Aday: What’s the most helpful piece of advice you have ever received about writing?

Shari: Read all of the books of your genre that you can get your hands on, and, oh yes, never give up. (Thanks Mom.)

Aday: How do you hone your writing skills?

Shari: Now it is mostly by reading the works of other writers. I seem to learn better by example.

Aday: What and where was your first piece of writing published?

Shari: The first thing I had published was a crossword puzzle in Children’s Playmate. The most exciting first publication was an article called “Baby Steps” for Once Upon A Time magazine. That acceptance made me feel like I had arrived and it wasn’t even for pay.

20 Simple Ways to Get Massive Traffic to your Website

Embarking on an Internet marketing campaign doesn't have to be difficult, tricky, or complicated. Here are a few simple ways (twenty in fact) that you can easily implement to get tons of traffic to your site right now!

1) Write articles: believe it or not this is an incredible tool for driving traffic. Well-written, relevant articles can net you quite a bit of activity to your website. Don't forget to add your URL in your byline. Articles should be 500 to 2,000 words in length. You can send articles to sites like: articlecity.com, goarticles.com, submityourarticles.com and ezinearticles.com.

2) Social bookmark *everything* - and I do mean everything, you can bookmark each page of your site and each blog entry you post. While this might seem tedious it's worth it. You'll see a strong increase in traffic if you social bookmark each page on your site and each of your blog entries.

3) List yourself in the best directories - you'll have to pay for this but since most people don't do this (since everyone's looking for a freebie) you could really enhance your traffic by getting a listing: http://dir.yahoo.com, botw.org.

4) Get yourself listed at: DMOZ.org - it's not easy to get listed there but worth the effort.

5) Review: if you can review hot new products or books within your market, head on over to Amazon.com and start positioning yourself as an expert. In order to do this effectively you'll want to create an Amazon profile and make sure and sign each review with a reference to your URL (your website). You can also go to epinions.com and revoo.com to review products as well.

6) Offer a freebie on craigslist: you'll be amazed at how much traffic you get from a single craigslist ad. They key here is to send people to a page on your site and make sure they have to sign up for something (like your email newsletter) before they can grab their freebie. That way you're not just getting traffic, you're also building your list.

7) Create a "recommended by" list on your del.icio.us page - you can do this by logging on and creating an account at del.icio.us and then tagging articles, blogs and other content you think is important to your readership. Then offer this page as a resource site. You can add a link to this page in your email signature line or on your website.

8) And speaking of your email signature line - do you have one? If you don't, create one. Believe it or not, people do follow these links. You'll be amazed how many folks read email signature lines. I have one and change it several times a year, depending on what we're doing or promoting or what books I have coming out.

9) Lend a helping hand: you can be an answer person at Yahoo Answers http://answers.yahoo.com/ - you don't have to spend hours on there but maybe a few minutes a week. Make sure and include a link back to your site by your answers.

10) Set up a social networking site using Facebook.com, Linkedin.com, or Squidoo. It's free and easy to do, just don't forget the all-important link back to your site!

11) Make sure your blog has an RSS feed so if you capture a reader you don't lose them if they forget to bookmark your site or blog.

12) Join relevant groups at Yahoo groups http://groups.yahoo.com/. You'll find everything from groups on growing your small business, writing books, finding your passion, even underwater basket weaving. I dare you to find one that isn't right for what you're promoting. When you do find the right group, join and participate as you can!

13) Podcasting is another great way to drive traffic. Start a podcast by going to AudioAcrobat http://bookmkr.audioacrobat.com/ - yes, this is our affiliate link. There are other programs you can use, but I love AudioAcrobat. You can record the podcast over the phone quickly and easily and then hit the "send" button on your computer once it's recorded and the system will syndicate it to 27 podcast directories including iTunes. It's a great way to let people know about you and your website!

14) Start a blog and then once you do, start commenting on other people's blogs, linking to them from your site or adding them to your blogroll.

15) Inbound links: don't squander your time (or a perfectly good link) on smaller low-traffic sites. Instead spend your time going after high traffic, high quality sites. Good sites should have a PR (page ranking) of 4-6 depending on the market. You can find out what a site's page ranking is by downloading the Google toolbar, which comes with a PR feature built in.

16) Start an email newsletter: while it may not seem like a newsletter that you email can drive traffic to your site, you'd be surprised at the effectiveness of this type of promotion. If your newsletter (like your articles) is interesting and relevant to your audience you'll find that it has a huge pass-through factor. Meaning that it is passed from one email subscriber to another. Also, if you have an email newsletter you should never, ever go to a single event without your handy sign-up sheet. Yes, you can even use offline events to drive traffic to your website.

17) And speaking of offline efforts: if you're ever quoted in a magazine or other publication, make sure and mention your URL as it's appropriate to the topic. Don't be too pushy about this, but do not forget to tell folks you have a website that may be a great resource for the topic of your interview.

18) If you have products to sell why not get a store on eBay? This site gets a tremendous amount of traffic, and on your sales page you're allowed to list your URL. Another great way to get an inbound link and a way for people to find you.

19) Load a video on YouTube and 57 other video sites - if you don't have a video or don't know how to create one, contact us and we'll refer you to our fabulous book video people!

20) While this isn't a tip per se it's still important. If you're going to go through all the trouble of getting traffic to your site, make sure your site is converting this traffic into something. Get folks to sign up for something, your newsletter, the RSS feed on your blog. Whatever it is, getting their email address will help you re-market to them when the time is right. Studies show that visitors landing on a site often don't buy the first time. That's ok! You want to get them into your marketing funnel so you can market to them again and again - not in a way that's obtrusive, offensive or downright annoying but in a way that is helping them with their own mission. An example of this might be an email newsletter. A helpful, informative newsletter is a fantastic funnel. A blog is another great way to keep people in your marketing loop without bombarding them with "please buy my stuff" email messages. Also, make sure you know what your traffic numbers are before you launch into any Internet marketing campaign. By traffic numbers, I mean how many people are visiting your site. You want to know this so you can gauge a before and after view of your marketing efforts.

The illustrations mesh seamlessly with an imaginative text. Mayra’s picture books have always entertained me. With Humberto, the Bookworm Hamster she’s succeeded again.

My artist drew me a picture for a book reading contest type giveaway. I had fliers made through Vista Print cheap. On the left side I've got the graphic & the right side of the page is a column of blank lines where they can enter books they've read. Since you're in Belgium, turn it into a PDF download. Make the graphic to be colored. Each student could color their own sheet.
To avoid extra shipping charges you could order your giveaways/drawing winner's gifts after a winner is named and they could be mailed directly from the vendor.

Mayra: I love animals. Who can resist a golden retriever puppy or a cute little hamster? I feel very close to animals and love writing their stories.

Aday: What do you want children to gain from Humberto, the Bookworm Hamster?

Mayra: That both books and friendship are great; that books are better enjoyed when they’re shared with friends.

Aday: What drew you to write Humberto’s story? What caused Humberto to be a hamster? Share your inspiration.

Mayra: I wanted to write about a little mouse or hamster who was an antisocial little bookworm until something happens that makes him be more social. So that was my premise. I let it simmer in my mind for a long time before finally sitting down one morning and putting it down on paper. In the end I opted to make Humberto a hamster. Humberto is the name of my father and my brother. The book is dedicated to them.

Aday: I see your articles all over the internet. How did you get so many writing gigs?

Mayra: I have been writing on and off for various publications for the past decade: Ezine Articles, Blogcritics Magazine, Suite101, American Chronicle, Associated Content, Oh My News International, Voice in the Dark Ezine, and most recently the Examiner. Some of these sites distribute their articles to other publications. This is probably why you see my articles around. But there’s a great site if you’re interested in getting writing gigs: http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com. I write for these publications for exposure, to bring traffic to my website. When you write articles you usually include a signature with your links at the bottom of the article. When people click on those links, they learn about you and your work. Traffic to my site increased

exponentially when I started writing for article distributors like Ezine Articles.

Aday: Book promotion gobbles up so much time. How often do you submit your articles?

Mayra: Tell me about it! Most crucial, they take your writing time, which is why I only write for Blogcritics and the Examiner now. I don’t have time for more because I need to focus on writing books.

Aday: Have you noticed an increase in book sales with your increased internet presence?

Mayra: Definitely! Especially because I live in Belgium yet my market is in the States, I do most of my book promotion online. This includes doing interviews such as this one and requesting reviews. I’ve found that for me, these are the most effective methods of promotion. But I’m not talking about sending your book to 5 reviewers. I’m talking about a major campaign where I send my book to about 50 reviewers and do at least 20 interviews. Since Humberto the Bookworm Hamster just came out, this is what I’m doing now. I also plan to do a series of articles about hamsters and the joys of reading for Ezine Articles and children’s ezines in order to bring traffic to my website and draw attention to my book.

Aday: Are your articles reprints? What percentage of your time do you spend writing articles?

Mayra: Yes, many of them are reprints. I’m not writing too many how-to articles anymore because they’re so time consuming. Most of my articles are book reviews and interviews with authors and pieces about new book releases.

Aday: What marketing tools will you employ to promote Humberto, the Bookworm Hamster?

Mayra: As mentioned before, mostly reviews and interviews. I’m not sure about the effectiveness of press releases anymore. Unless you have a unique angle about your book on that press release, or your story is somehow tied to current news, I think they’re a waste of time. You’re better off contacting your local radio stations and newspapers. I’m also changing my mind about virtual book tours. I don’t think it’s necessary to constraint the time frame in two weeks or one month. A virtual book tour can get very exhausting because it happens in such a short time. Now I prefer requesting reviews and interviews on a regular basis. This is like a virtual book tour but it just goes on and on for as long as you can keep it going.

Aday: What is your favorite marketing tool and why?

Mayra: I’d say reviews, followed by interviews. But you have to get many people to review your book to create the ‘buzz’ and you have to keep it going on a regular basis. Also, one must make sure that the site where the review is published receives a decent amount of traffic. You can send your book to ten reviewers who have a small blog that’s updated once a month, but this won’t make any difference. Look for high traffic review publications/sites like Book Ideas, Book Pleasures, Armchair Interviews, Curled Up With a Good Book, Blogcritics Magazine, Stories for Children Magazine, YABooksCentral, Midwest Book Review, etc. Of course, it’s expensive to send review copies, which is why I also send ebook copies. Out of those 50 reviewers I contacted, half of them accept ebook copies.

Thoughtful Gift Idea Swap

How are the thoughtful gifts coming? Are you having a hard time thinking of what to do? How about making a family memory book. Each member must share a typed memory. Each person should make a copy for everyone's book & exchange. Because people are flaky and won't come prepared, create questionnaires and have each family member complete one.

Since you brought this idea up, collect the questionnaires. Type them up and email or snail mail everyone their copies for the books. Keep the questions brief. Only have one or two questions. Vary the questions. Give different sets of questions.

Here's an example:

Grandparents:
What's something funny your parents said or did?
What's some advice the gave you?

Parents:
What was something funny each of your children did or said?
What was their favorite cuddly toy's name and toy type?

Those are just a couple examples. You can gear your questions to draw out the stories that have been told by word of mouth. I am probably going to use my camcorder & transcribe the stories.
The first folder/book will be stories and memories I've written. I'll have to forward family stories for each person to add to their folder.

I created a cookbook several years ago. It contained all of the family recipes. They were a huge hit. Everyone loved them. Our holiday memories are laced with our favorite dishes. Christmas brings to mind many desserts and confections. Write a blurb or stories to put in the cookbook.

The Making of "One Noble Journey" by DIXIE PHILLIPS

I think experiencing life is the best teacher. One Noble Journey came out of my own childhood. My maternal grandmother lived in a very poor section of town called Oak Park. As a child, I would go and spend time at her home. I became acquainted with her neighbors, played with the other kids and was moved with compassion when I saw their severe poverty. I was also in awe of their sense of community.

When I was in Middle School, I heard some of my classmates taunt some of the kids from Oak Park. It deeply affected me and I tried to think of a way I could champion their cause. I would befriend them but always wondered how I could defend them even more.

Because Oak Park was a flood plain in the lowlands, I knew I wanted the story to be about the lowlanders and the highlanders. I began there and then thought of how difficult it was for a highlander to befriend a lowlander. Yet in One Noble Journey, Bella – a highlander considers Journey – a lowlander to be her best friend. My hope was to show how children have a special innocence about them. They usually aren’t aware of what part of town you come from.

Another interesting “behind the scenes” tidbit for One Noble Journey is how I chose my characters. My niece and her husband adopted a lovely little girl and her younger brother from Ethiopia. They were from an orphanage called Hannah’s Hope, which is the name of the orphanage in my story, too. The adoption process was such an amazing journey of God’s divine destiny, my niece and her husband decided to name their new little girl Journey. So my main character was born.

Every evening when I would sit down to write the story; I realized I needed an animal to help capture the children’s attention. When I was little, our family had a pet raccoon named Bandit. He was always getting into trouble with his busy little paws. So, I threw Bandit into One Noble Journey.

Once I figured out my characters, I began writing the plot. After I finish the story, I usually let it sit for a few days. Then I go back with a clear mind and edit my manuscript again. When I get it where I feel it’s pretty well finished, I edit again and again and again! ;-)

Then, I allow others to critique it and usually begin editing some more. I take their criticisms very seriously and edit again. It is about this time, the story begins to sparkle like a shiny jewel. I look it over one final time and then submit it to Guardian Angel Publishing.

Once Lynda Burch from Guardian Angel Publishing accepted One Noble Journey, Kim Sponaugle was assigned to be the illustrator.

Branding: The Secret to Selling More Books

If you've ever wondered what motivates people to buy a book, consider this: consumers don't buy a book, they buy a brand or, as a friend of mine says, consumers crave a brand. This is true now more than ever. Why? Because people want consistency (think McDonald's), they want value, and they want to be entertained, enlightened, or educated. A brand, when done properly, can really pull in readers to your site, your message, and your book. Here's how to do it.

Brands, in their traditional form, are the things we think of like Coke, Kleenex, and Advil. These are big, robust brands that are recognizable both in messaging and packaging. The two key components in effective brand strategy are both of these things. If your message and package are different, or fragmented and not uniform, you will confuse your audience.

Regardless of whether you are fiction or non-fiction, a brand is a brand. Think Nora Roberts or Dan Brown, both of these authors are brands. Their messaging is consistent and their packaging uniform. The audience is told in word, color and image exactly what they are going to get and the "brand" does not disappoint. When creating a brand for yourself, here are a few things you should consider:

Understanding the "look" of the market: there is a look and feel to each market. For some markets it will be a consistency in color, messaging, or packaging, and for others, it's just a "feeling." For example, if you're a thriller writer, websites for thrillers tend to be dark and foreboding. There may not be a consistent message but the feel is the same: scary. Getting to know your market is the #1 thing you should do when you're thinking of developing your brand.

Identity crisis: who are you? So who are you, really? This isn't meant to be a psychological exam, but rather an in-depth look at your brand, your market, your current focus, and future goals. There's a saying that goes: "If you don't know what road you're on, any path will do." The same is true for your brand and your career. Define where you want to go and then build to that message.

Brainstorm your brand: if necessary, get some outside help. Branding doesn't have to be expensive, but it does have to be thorough. Understanding your brand and your message is important because if you don't control it, your consumer will. I spoke to an author the other day who had been propelled on her journey by her brother's suicide. From that, she learned, grew, and is now working to inspire others to overcome some of the most horrific challenges life can throw at you.

Platform building: building a strong brand is also about platform building. Understand that your platform can be a lot of things: the message and consistency of your blog, any book promotion you do, blogs you have a presence on. All of this is important, you want to get known in your market, and you want to lead with a strong and consistent message.

Consistent marketing materials: by this I mean business cards, letterhead if you have it, bookmarks, folders, etc. Again, don't scatter your efforts by having a hodgepodge of marketing materials that looks cobbled together. Everything is your resume. This is very true with anything you mail out or any "leave behinds," like bookmarks, postcards, and business cards.

Delivering on a promise: whatever you promise, you must deliver. In fact, promise less and deliver more. If you have promised the reader a "thrill ride," don't give them a soft-peddled story. If your message doesn't live up to its promise, you'll lose your reader. Probably forever.

The center of the universe: your website. An author's website is the single most important piece of your brand. Yes, your book is important, but before a reader gets there they will often find your website first. Make sure it's brand-focused and professional. Don't have someone design it who does not understand your market or your work. Make sure your site is professional and follows whatever "theme" you are trying to create.

Building a strong brand is more important than ever. A brand not only shows consistency but it shows you're serious about what you're doing; and if you show you're serious, your readers will take you seriously, too.

EXAMPLES

Kiss a Shark Week - Come up with fun and clever ways to kiss a shark. If you're an artist draw humorous pictures.Host a contest for the funniest or most creative picture or drawing. You could write a story for your website.

National Seed Swap Day - Write a short story with a sidebar for a seed swapping party or a planting activity for teachers, homeschoolers or kids.

National Skating Month - Hold a book signing and wear roller skates. Offer a prize drawing at your book signing and put all kids that show up on skates in the drawing or give a gift bag to anyone that shows up in skates.

Look for any holiday to tie to your book, story or article. It's a great idea sparker.

BOOK MARKETING BRAINSTORM

Author Visits are a great way to promote and sell books. Max has conducted many author visits at schools, but hasn't had much luck at getting library gigs.

Try to create a library fund raising event through a visit. Advertise the event at the boy's and girl's clubs, campfire, boy scouts and girl scouts, grocery stores, and libraries. Find a cheap/free location like your library or local community center to hold the event. Get fliers from Vista Print, make them on your computer or somewhere else cheap. Post a notice around town. You might can get some free media attention. Announce an evening reading session. You could charge an admission of $2.00 a head or more. Offer free tickets at your local radio station in contests. Offer the library 50% of the money taken at the door.
To make the occasion a fun experience, take some wood & surround them with rocks. Take red Christmas tree lights and put them under the logs. You have a campfire. Dim the lights or turn them off. Get a book light to read a chapter of your book. with the sound effects and show you put on, I'm sure it would be a hit.

With your reluctant reader and reading promotion platform, any type of literacy promotion downloads would be a natural fit like certificates of achievement, bookmarks, posters & or stickers.

Have a contest for __ books read. (corroborated by a teacher). Each person that qualifies gets an entry. The more books read grants the person more chances to win. The winner will receive __ # of your books signed.

Aday: What can you tell us about your publisher, Baker Trittin Press?

Max : This is a small publisher that actually formed six years ago in order to publish my first books. Since then they have branched out into publishing other authors. Most recently they began a contest for high school students and have published some of those manuscripts.

Aday: How does your book get promoted? Publisher? You?

Max : The publisher travels to Christian school conventions and homeschool conferences. Initially they attempted to work with Christian bookstores, but we all know what’s been happening with reductions in that market. In addition, my books are distributed by Baker & Taylor, they’re available on places like Amazon, and the publisher maintains their own site for selling books.

But all of my professional life has been involved in the production of films, client video programs, and television commercials. This has required the knowledge of marketing and promotion principles that have proven extremely helpful with my books. When I began writing, I also started working on my platform. This included writing articles, short stories, developing media relationships, assembling email lists, and offering myself as a speaker about the importance of boys and reading.

There wouldn’t be time of space to go into all of that here, but authors today are required to take a strong position as marketers in the current publishing structure.

Aday: Can you describe your methods for marketing your book?

Max : Probably the strongest areas are in education. There is a growing following with homeschoolers, librarians, teachers, and parents. So I key into those people and markets. In early October, I had an article published in Knowonder Magazine. The title is, Help for Struggling, Reluctant Readers. Since then, I’ve had over a dozen requests for permission to reprint the article, and many more direct requests for it when I offered the article on my blog.

Speaking of my blog, Books For Boys http://booksandboys.blogspot.com consistently ranks # 1 on Google, when people are searching under that subject. As a result, other publishers are discovering the blog and asking me to review or announce their books. The most recent review was for a book from Scholastic, and I have two more to do for Peachtree publishing.

So my approach to marketing includes any and all openings or opportunities to let the widest possible audience know that my books are available.

Aday: I see you have a niche as a boy-friendly reluctant reader author. What steps other than the types of books you’ve written did/do you take to achieve that?

Max : This began with extensive research into what kinds of books were available and where the potential markets were. When I discovered that there was a tremendous gap in the area of books for boys, and for struggling & reluctant readers, I saw a perfect match. That’s because I had grown up hating to read.

Since I grew up as a struggling, reluctant reader, it gave me an understanding of the reasons for this. Once a few of my manuscripts were completed, I asked people on some of my social networking sites if their sons had this same problem. If they did, would they like to try some of my stories to see if they helped. And boy did they ever. The emails I received gave me profound encouragement to move forward with my plans.

My work in film production has included many dramatic films for children. I discovered that boys would not watch a girl’s story, but girls would watch one that featured boys. That’s the same template I chose for my own books.

Boys like humor, danger, action, adventure, and a lot going on. They don’t like endless details or large blocks of type on a page. Reluctant readers may be easily distracted, so my books have shorter sentences, easier words, and move a rapid pace. Most of the stories include a boy involved in an incredible adventure, or one who solves a mystery, along with his friends, and they become heroes.

Now, kids tell me that reading one of my books is like being in an exciting or scary movie.

Aday: On your website you say you prefer reading nights, where parents attend with their children. Why?

Max : My schools program includes the extensive use of music and sound effects. That’s because I use some of these same tools to set the stage, in my mind, for the various scenes I’m writing. On reading nights, I’m able to share these same concepts with parents. Once they see how different my approach is to storytelling, they tend to buy a lot of books for their children. When an author can make that kind of a connection, it sets the stage for interest in additional books as they are published.

Aday: Do you actively market “reading nights” and school visits? How do you spread the word?

Max : I’ve developed a mailing list of regional and area schools, and send periodic emails and snail mail promotion to them. Here’s a link to one of those promotion pages which appears on my author’s web site http://www.maxbooks.9k.com/whats_new.html

Because I’ve been doing this for a while, word of mouth has also become a factor.

Aday: Do your visits take place in places other than schools? Can you name a few?

Max : Because my audience is primarily tween students, I focus on the schools where they are. In addition, I’ve made myself available to homeschool situations, and have spoken to educators at the university level, including PhDs. Just this past Saturday, I had the opportunity to speak with adults who work with children. Many of them bought books, and several bought copies of all six that I had with me. I’ve offered to speak in libraries, but none have taken me up on that yet. I’m also available for radio interviews.

And interviews like yours provide an additional opportunity to “speak” to a wider audience.

Aday: What’s the key to appealing to reluctant readers?

Max : Working on the principle that it takes one to know one, I believe is the key in my case. When I began writing, I focused my attention on just one reluctant reader boy. After completing a total of thirty-five manuscripts for this audience, I discovered that I’m actually writing to myself. If I wrote the kinds of books that I would have enjoyed as a child, it stands to reason that others will like them too.

Aday: As a child you were a reluctant reader. Are you today? What were your favorite books and/or authors and why?

Max : I still find it difficult to read for enjoyment. My preference would always be to watch something than to read about it. I’m a visual learner in that sense. It might be hard for others to understand, and it isn’t because I wrote any of them, but I can easily enjoy reading one of my manuscripts. In fact, when I read them, it’s as if I’m reading something for the first time. My mind doesn’t make the connection that I had anything to do with it. In my writing, as well as the scripts that I write for my video clients, I always do a role reversal and try to become the recipient of what is written, not the author of it.

One book I read recently was The Alchemist. What I liked about it was that it was also written in the storyteller form that I try to achieve. I’m half-way through reading Wild at Heart by John Eldredge. I especially like this book because it speaks to the troubles that men face in becoming men. One of the hopes I have had for my writing has been to set the stage for boys where they can learn some of the principles they’ll need as men.

Amanda Gray is a Special Education teacher. She currently works at the University of Newcastle (Australia) educating undergraduate teachers about inclusive practice. Before coming to the University, Amanda worked in schools and early learning centers, where she developed a passion for supporting children experiencing emotional or social difficulties. The Learn to be Buddies series was born out of this passion. To date, Amanda has had a number of articles and a play published in Explore, a Pearson Education children’s magazine. Dave is Brave is her first children’s book.

AMANDA GRAY INTERVIEW

Aday: How have you promoted your book?

Amanda: I first began by setting up a website – which was a big learning curve for me. But it has been a good platform to disseminate information. To let people know about the website, I started by sending out paper newsletters to schools, preschools, early intervention services and therapists for children with disabilities. I also began blogging and connecting with other bloggers. This led to connections on social networking sites, with most interest coming from my many Twitter and Facebook friends and fans. But I have also used more traditional methods, with several appearances on local radio and an editorial in a local paper (all free). I also pop a mail order form and professionally printed postcard into each book I sell as I find that word of mouth recommendations are the most effective sales tool.

Aday: How did you identify your audience?

Amanda: In writing the book I had a general sense that the book could be used for all young children, but especially for those children who needed explicit instruction in social skills. It quickly became evident as I publicized the book that those most interested in the Learn to be Buddies series were families and services supporting children with Autism. Though regular schools and preschools are purchasing the book to support anti-bullying education, it is from people connected with Autism that I have received the most feedback about Dave is Brave.

Aday: Your background lends credibility to your book. How can someone attain trust when they lack a formal education?

Amanda: I think that credibility comes with personal experience as well as a formal education. For example, if you write about your experiences you have as much credibility as a person with a degree on the subject. But in both cases we need to avoid “preaching” or talking as though we have all the answers, as both personal experience and formal education has its limits.*smile*

Aday: What market do you want to penetrate most? How are you attempting to do it?

Amanda: I would love Dave is Brave to go where it is needed most. I have always been passionate about helping families support their children in learning social skills, so I would love to spread the word to parents. I began with schools. Now a number of playgroups have heard about the book. In the near future, I am hoping to juggle my commitments at University with visiting schools, playgroups and libraries to read to children and/or their parents. I would then send information about Dave is Brave home with them. This information could be in something as simple as a bookmark. I am also hoping to develop a fundraising scheme for schools, playgroups and preschools, whereby they receive a percentage of the profit from sales.

Aday: How did you determine the activities and lessons in your teacher’s guide?

Amanda: When working with my illustrator, each picture was carefully designed to reflect a particular skill that I wanted children to learn from the book. So the facial expressions, body language and positioning of the characters all contributed to shaping the activities and lesson guides. The two games were designed based on the growing audience for the book. The Feelings Game was designed based on the importance of helping children with Autism understand and interpret facial expressions and emotions. The How are You Feeling?! Board Game focuses on the development of coping skills, a key element of helping children to be resilient in the face of difficulties such as bullying.

Aday: What piece of advice would you give a writer about promoting their book(s)?

Amanda:

Start small – friends and family, work networks and small newsletter runs can start people buzzing about the book.
Only do it if you are passionate about the subject – if you believe in what you are doing it is much easier to get others to believe in it, too.
Be humble and not too pushy - listen and take on board feedback, but don’t take it personally. Not everyone will love your book.
Focus on your target audience – don’t try to please everyone and establish your credibility with those who will like your book.
Be prepared to give away a few books. *smile*

Consider a couple things before and while writing your book marketing plan.

1. How is your book different than other books in the genre that have similar subject matter?
Go to Amazon, Barnes and Noble or other sites that supply the back of book blurbs.

2. What demographic will buy your book?
Do not concentrate who will read the book, because the reader and buyer may not be the same person.

3. How will you let people know your book was published and is for sale?
You need to widen your circle of contacts. If you only sell your book to the people you know, you're going t sell books that are in the hundreds. We want to sell our books to thousands or millions.

Book Review

The Misadventures of Rooter & Snuffle is three stories in one picture book. Each story teaches a lesson through the character’s experiences.Have you ever heard of a praying raccoon? Brace yourself as the two brother's attempt to extricate themselves from their misadventures with God's helping hand.

In the first story, “The Search”, Rooter has come of age and is allowed to forage for food on his own. That’s not exactly true. Mother and father make him take his baby brother along. Snuffle disappears and Rooter’s imagination churns up some dire outcomes. He was not responsible. What will happen to Snuffle? Will he find him?

In the second story, “Rooter’s Rule”, Rooter’s parents make him share. Even a friend scolds him for not sharing with his little brother. Rooter doesn’t understand why everyone wants him to share everything. Will Rooter ever learn to have a giving heart and share?

In the third story, “Danger at River Bend”, Rooter’s mother warns him not to go to the River Bend. His beaver friend, Sloppy assures him it is perfectly safe, and it has the perfect skipping stones. Snuffle wants to learn to skip stones. He agrees to go with Sloppy. Rooter ends up following along. Will they get caught? Why did Mother think it was dangerous?

Shari shows the resentment an older child can feel for younger siblings. Rooter’s inner dialogue is portrayed realistically. Any child, that has a younger brother or sister will identify with Rooter. Shari shows how struggles are handled with prayer and introspection.

The illustrations by Kevin Collier draw the readers into the story. From the raccoon’s black mask stretched across his soulful eyes to the contents of a trash can, the pictures cause a child to fall head over heels for the “The Misadventures of Rooter & Snuffle". If the author chooses to do a blog book tour, she can google butter beans (Rooter's favorite food), raccoon rescue, or frog legs. Look for sites other than your regular review sites. Sites that have recipes might be a place to help promote your book & have little or no competition.

STORES TO STOCK THE BOOKS

Stores in campgrounds, wilderness refuges, natural history museums, camping equipment stores and nature stores would be good places to have stock your books. Find a national chain or popular store and get them to use your book as a promotional item. (gift with purchase).

WEBSITE CONTEST/GIVEAWAYS

Have vegetable dye temporary tattoos made and offer them to children on your website for FREE if they send you a SASE.

Coloring or drawing contests - create promotional items - like stickers (using illustrations & printing them on computer printer address labels or make a stationary gift set (print illustrations onto envelopes & paper and place them in a folder (for about .25 at local stores in the school supply section). You could even personalize them with a child's name.

AUTHOR APPEARANCES

Contact your local Campfire Group Summer Day Camps or Christian church camp about their summer programs. (It would be best to schedule it during the time the parents visit the camp (need paying customers or book sales). Offer to attend a camping trip out and be the entertainment. You can play the Rooter & Snuffle song & teach a fun dance.
